The influence of thermal processing on TiO2crystallisation in alkali-borosilicate glass was investigated applyingdifferential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis and electronmicroscopy. The surfaces of the samples prepared by both volume and surface TiO2crystallisation were evaluated from the viewpoint of their respectivebactericidal properties. A polycrystalline material with anatase forming theonly crystalline phase with crystal size ranging from 0.01 to 0.5 µm, wasprepared by controlled, volume glass crystallisation. The bactericidal effectwas demonstrated on fracture surfaces of a mechanically ground sample ofcrystallized glass.
